Olfactory Girl

My love affair with perfume started at a very early age. I recall the whirlwind of intoxicating scents my mom would leave behind as she left the house for a night on the town or a day at the office. It was something warm, sweet and sometimes heavy (Opium perhaps?). I didn't mind though. My father would spritz on Lagerfeld and it reminded me of the holidays. When I smell my dad, I think of church and formal occasions and holiday dinners. It's all very comforting and nostalgic. Scents can immediately transport you to a time and place in your life that a faint memory doesn't allow. They say scent is your strongest sense and I wouldn't disagree. In fact, I am happy my sense of smell is as acute as it is which is probably why I've taken on many perfume paramours in my life. Finding your signature fragrance is kind of like the journey in finding yourself...whatever that means. Let's just say I've found many senses -or "scents" of self during the early years beginning with Fendi, Amarige by Givenchy, Venezia, Carolina Hererra (black and yellow box w/polka dots), Chanel Allure, Donna Karan Cashmere Mist, Bijou, Boucheron, Champs-Elysees, Versace (so old, they don't make it but it has medusa head on bottle-loved!!), CK One, Jean Paul Gautier (one of his original old school bust bottle scents) - to name a few! Those fragrances carried me from grade school to high school to college in no particular order! After honing in on my scent path, I am now into complex florals (preferably white) as well as spicy, oriental and woodsy notes. Now my old faithfuls are Fracas, Lanvin Eclat d'Arpege, Quel que Fleurs and I am soon to adopt two new scents into my fragrance family! Let me introduce you to "Daphne" and "Back to Black...." - BH
Not your prissy floral, this sophisticated and wild scent is inspired by Daphne Guiness's travels and favorite places while capturing her refined and wacky sense of style and personality. I see a connection! Notes: Bitter orange, incense, saffron, tuberose, tunisian jasmine to name a few. (Available at Comme des Garcons -NY, 212-604-9200; www.luckyscent.com)
Kilian Hennessy, heir to the French cognac and grandson of LVMH founder, has concocted "Back to Black" - an exotic scent that is something out of "Arabian Nights" with notes of bergamot, raspberry, blue chamomile, cardamom, coriander, saffron, vetiver and oakmoss. (www.luckyscent.com)

Smelling good is just as important as looking good. Indulge your senses with a gorgeous scent and make yourself unforgettable.
